How Arizona’s Climate Affects Metal Performance and Storage

Here in Arizona, we’re well-accustomed to the extreme climate of the desert; dry winds, hot sun, and plenty of temperature fluctuations. And while the climate is a large part of what makes Phoenix such an exciting place to live, it can also make things significantly more complicated if you work with metal. Whether you’re in aerospace, manufacturing, construction, demolition, or automotive industries, it’s important for you to know how Arizona’s extreme weather could impact how you use or store metal.

  1. Low humidity

To start on a positive note, working with metal in Arizona’s dry climate means that you’re less likely to deal with rust during most of the year. Unfortunately, the arid atmosphere can also make metal finishes more susceptible to cracking or chipping.

Tip: Clean stored metal regularly to prevent dust and particulate matter, which can cause abrasion and trap moisture.

  2. Ultraviolet exposure

While most metals are resistant to sun damage, certain metal finishes or coatings can be prone to degradation from Arizona’s intense sun. Painted surfaces, polymer coating, or powder coating can fade, break down, or become brittle.

Tip: Aside from storing metals with finishes out of the sun, you could consider temporarily wrapping coated metals in UV-resistant sheeting, or else use UV-resistant paints or coatings.

  3. Extreme heat

Some metals will expand and contract with extreme temperatures, necessitating special consideration with storing or usage. For metal structures that will be exposed to the Arizona elements, we often recommend stainless steel, tungsten, titanium, nickel alloys, or molybdenum. And for all metal, avoid storing in direct sunlight, especially if dimensional precision is critical.

Tip: For optimal structural soundness, use expansion joints or flexible connectors. Putting these in place allows for small amounts of shifting or movement without putting the structure at risk.

  4. Monsoon season

As dry as Arizona is most of the time, monsoon season can bring challenges of its own. From June through September, Phoenix is likely to see rainstorms, hail, flash flooding, and high winds, often without ample warning. Especially if you’re not used to protecting your metal from moisture, these seasonal surprises can catch you off-guard and potentially cause significant damage.

Tip: It is best to store your metal materials off the ground, especially during monsoon season. Make sure your job site has an adequate drainage system as well.

Our hope is that by realizing and understanding some of Arizona’s environmental extremes, and what they could mean for your business, you’ll be able to keep things running smoothly regardless of the weather forecast. Following these tips can extend the life of your metal inventory, reduce the amount of wasted material, and help ensure you keep your promised deadlines.
